The Marching Orders of Technopoly
A response to an article David linked yesterday, Mice Guys Finish Last:
I have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. That was just about enough to turn me into a Luddite. The marching orders of Technopoly[1] are “If we can do it, it’s right” and “If we can do it, we do it” which resolve to “it’s right if I do it.” Always an ethics committee is there to help sear the consciences of those involved.
So many of these folk appear to be basically decent humans, on the surface. What’s creepy is knowing that almost all of them would be eager, in the name of Science, to help Big Brother set up a comprehensive surveillance and torture system.
[1] If you don’t know the reference, it’s a Neil Postman book, plus the Georgia Tech custom version of Monopoly.
