Updating the Social Gospel

Mark Tooley writes at FrontPage magazine about an upcoming new Social Creed of the National Council of Churches, which is intended to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1908 Social Creed. Tooley is not comfortable with the NCC passing on the torch of the Social Gospel to itself at hundred, given its recent history and troubles. Which is not surprising.

Why are conservative Christians always tarred and smeared with the false accusation of trying to impose a "theocracy"? Yet when liberal "Christians" try to impose political means, they are never called on it by the mainstream media.

Isn't this a double standard? Isn't hypocrisy an appropriate diagnosis?

The answer is "yes." It is also true that just as the "religious right" gets tarred for being in the pocket of the Republicans, the "religious left" (which includes most of the mainline denominational leadership, ie, ELCA, ECUSA, PCUSA, UCC, UMC) never really gets so much as a mention in the media for being tied very tightly to the agendas of the left wing of the Democratic Party. In fact if one looks at the media, the only group of Christians doing anything "political" would be the orthodox. Those that make up the NCC and WCC are simply doing the work of God.

Ironic isn't it.
