Needs of Union
David Dockery, President of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, has issued an appeal for help with the "shocking but realistic" estimate of what will be required to return our campus to full capacity (more than $20 million). Union University was devasted by an F-4 tornado on February 5, 2008. Many buildings were completely destroyed. Even though 1,200 students were on campus when the tornado hit, no lives were lost. An official site for recovery information has been establish and donations may be made there. A slideshow on that site will give you an idea of the destruction visited on that Christian school, a school I have come to appreciate over the last several years for the strength of its commitment to Christ.

I would have thought UU would have insurance coverage for this type of thing.

I am "fasting" from MC during Lent, but felt it would be appropriate for me to add my voice to this post. I live only about an hour from Union and the storm system which produced the tornado which hit Union also devastated the Memphis area.
I have a good friend on the faculty at Union and the son of one of my staff members was in one of the dorms destroyed by the tornado. Fortunately, he and his roommates made it to the secure bathroom just in time before the tornado ripped through their dorm. His car was totaled and he lost some personal effects, but suffered no bodily injury.
I know that at least one student was seriously injured, but have not heard about his condition recently. Thank God, no one was killed at Union, though several people were killed in Memphis. (My family hid in a pantry under our stairs, but thankfully no tornadoes touched down near out home.)
Union is an orthodox Southern Baptist college and is deserving of any support it receives. It represents the best in quality, orthodox Christian education.

Amen, GL. Our staff and students (Bryan College in Dayton) have been helping out as they can as Union tries to get back on its feet. Some of our students were there when the tornado hit, and a number of locals attend Union, also. No one we knew was seriously injured, but it's been a tough time for many of those young people. The school does deserve any help that can be given.

By the way, insurance will help, but it will not be enough, no matter what their coverage is. We had a building fire here a number of years ago, and the insurance company gave us a very good settlement, but there is a great deal in any such situation that can't be recoverd or paid for in that way.

Or "recovered" either, for that matter, said the English teacher.

Kirk,
To answer your question, see http://www.uu.edu/news/NewsReleases/release.cfm?ID=1307
Specifically, "while insurance will cover much of the damages, because of deductibles, lost revenue from student housing and other programs, plus the increased cost of rebuilding campus housing to greater standards, Union will need about $20 million for the rebuilding process."

Ouch! I do hope Wheaton will chip in to help them out. I believe there are several professors who have passed between the two schools.
