Shortages in UK: Was PD James on to Something?
PD James, author of The Children of Men, envisioned therein a world in which no more babies could be conceived: infertility just set in, worldwide. According to BioEdge, there is now in the UK at least, it seems, a shortage of sperm. And...get this, there is also a shortage of egg donors in Britain, ("largely because donors may not be compensated"). So which shortage came first? And why all the interest in procreation all of a sudden? There is an increasing demand for the components of baby-making, while at the same time most people engaging in the activity designed for baby-making are happiest when the components keep their distance or are not even involved. Most, not all.

Another thing about that article that bothers me is the reference to sperm as a "commodity". Are all of our cells commodities? It seems to just one more step in the cheapening of human life.

The US has had sperm banks for decades.
"It seems to [be] just one more step in the cheapening of human life."
Yep. Unfortunately, it was a step that was taken long ago. I don't believe that ova can be bought and sold, at least for now.
The commodification of the whole person is still illegal, though.
