From Heather Has Two Mommies to His Dark Materials, there is much to lament about the current state of children’s literature. Kid-lit specialist Patricia Owen demonstrates on the latest installment of the Mars Hill Audio journal how the Newberry Awards have contributed to children’s literature as social action with pen and ink. Owen, however, also finds much to praise. She compiles a list of good Newberry Award-winning children’s books, available on the Mars Hill site.
By the way, I am willing to wager that those who love Touchstone will also enjoy Mars Hill. It is a CD “periodical” that will remind you something of NPR with a coherent mind and a regenerate heart. You can sample a demo or subscribe to the journal here.
