David Bentley Hart, Eastern Orthodox theologian and contributor to Touchstone and First Things, will speak in Charlottesville as part of the Virginia Festival of the Book. "Ivan Karamazov's Rebellion: The Suffering of Children and The Love of God" is the name of the lecture to be given on Friday, March 24 at 7pm, at the Holiday Inn Charlottesville. The talk will explore themes from Hart's recent book "The Doors of the Sea: Where Was God in the Tsunami?." There is no charge for the lecture and it is open to the public. The Holiday Inn is at 1901 Emmet St (Rt. 29) on the north side of town; detailed directions are available here.
David Hart will also be conducting a lenten retreat the following day, March 25, at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Charlottesville. In the morning he will discuss the difference between theodicy and the gospel, with an emphasis upon the New Testament language of spiritual warfare. In the afternoon he will talk about the eye of charity, and how it alone allows us to see the world as God's good creation. The retreat is open to the public, and will last from 9:30am to 3pm, with lunch provided. Space is limited and reservations are necessary. A $15 donation is requested. The retreat will be preceded by Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Annunciation at 8am, and followed by Vespers at 3pm, to which the public is also invited. For reservations or further information e-mail here.
