Donald Miller is the new guru of what a friend of mine calls the "pomo/emo/I hate my dad" wing of evangelicalism. Miller’s typical fare is recycled Protestant liberalism mixed in with "Jesus People"-style hip evangelical rage against authority and Sojourners-style rococo pseudo-Marxism, all through the filter of grunge coffeehouse postmodernism. Unfortunately, it’s all being bought by people who ought to know better, but who would rather rebel against their elders than learn from the hard battles they had to fight.
His newest book, however, is something a bit different: a look from the inside at the ravages of being a fatherless boy in contemporary America.
My research assistant Robert E. Sagers (like Miller, an Oregonian) has written a fine review essay on Miller’s newest book, To Own a Dragon. It will be published soon in the Journal of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (JBMW). But you can read it now at the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood site.
As Robbie points out, Miller’s book offers very few solutions, but it does give a raw look at the problem of abandonment by a father. There are some things here all of us need to hear, especially those of us entrusted with shepherding churches and families. Check out the review here.
