Dr. Moore's An American Baptist Preacher's Abortion reminded me of the insightful words of Alexander Pope:
Vice is a creature of such frightful mien,
That to be loathed, needs but to be seen.
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.
It is a warning to all of us, of course, but made glaringly obvious in cases like the pastor's. I don't mean to sound particularly pious about this, but after reading such things, in which moral blindness is so horrifyingly displayed, I always wonder: to how many sins in my own life am I similarly blind?
And that is why normally no one can be a Christian in isolation. In my case, no matter how morally blind I may be, my wife (God bless her) will certainly point out my failings! I commend also the small group movement so prevalent in evangelical churches these days. It's hard to conceal your faults for long to a group of a dozen or so Christians who see you on a regular basis.
