Robert Hart writes about the passing of Christian scholar Henry Chadwick: "Cambridge University is sad to announce the death of former Master of Peterhouse and Fellow of Trinity College Reverend Professor Henry Chadwick, FBE, KBE, who died on Tuesday 17 June at the age of 88."
I've read a number of Dr. Chadwick's works over the years, and just read his "East and West" last year. I found it extremely helpful in understanding what led to the split between E and W. He always seemed to me to be an irenic, nonpolemical scholar, and shall be missed.
Memory eternal!

I second Rob's motion.
His brother Owen is (was?) an equally distinguished scholar.
Unfortunately -- though of course it does not detract from their considerable scholarly attainments -- at least one of them appears to have favored women's ordination in his later years.

This is extremely sad news, and I cannot help but wonder, given the loss of so many great biblical scholars and historians over the past several years, where we will see their like again.

The Church Universal has lost one of its most towering and respected scholars. Vale, Henry Chadwick.
