Over at Beliefnet, a debate, or a Blogalogue has begun between David Klinghoffer, who is Jewish, and Jim Wallis who isn't. I was taken with Klinghoffer's opening lines that the political debate now between Dems and the other guys really has a theological dimension to it. It is ironic that this debate, which is not right out in the open in terms of gloves off, comes at a time when many Christians are getting tired of being viewed as voting according to narrowly religious principles, i.e., they are portrayed as single-issue [anti-abortion, what else?] voters, which is a code word for simple-minded. Klinghoffer is no simpleton. Nor, dare I say, are millions of so-called sinlge-issue voters. Oppose slavery but it's legal? Don't you dare vote on that one issue alone, after all, its part of whole fabric or tissue..... Well, let them go at it, and I'll listen in from time to time.
From Beliefnet's debate, or a Blogalogue: "Is God a Republican, a Democrat, or neither?"
Neither. God is a monarch (or rather, THE MONARCH) and you'll search Scripture long and hard (and without success) to find any support whatsoever for either a republic or a democracy. But, of course, that is not what the author of the question intended to ask. What he really is asking us to consider is "How would God have us vote?"
It will be interesting to see how that debate goes.
Thanks for the link, Jim.

Wallis' bumper stickers and other goods usually have "God is Not a Republican" in big letters, and "Or a Democrat" in smaller letters. While this may fairly address the most likely presuppositions of Wallis' audience, it also gives an unintended picture of how strongly Wallis believes each portion of his message.
In other news, I heard on NPR this afternoon that a bunch of big name Evangelical folks just had a little Q & A meeting with Barack Obama. Worth a post?

What would it prove, other than "Stupidity has no denomination"?
