I find the generosity and support of our readers heartening. Many have responded this last week. Gifts have ranged from $25 to $3,000! I repeat myself: Wherever I go, I tell people that I meet that Touchstone has a superb, generous, loyal readership, and this has been the case for many years now. This is no exaggeration. Our readers and friends know the value of what we do. I can't take credit for any of it: it all comes from the gifts of the Lord within the community of his saints. We wish to serve Him by serving you and many others. Please assist us today with a donation to help us promote orthodox Christianity, for Christ, creed, and culture.
Speaking of culture, one way of serving you is to share resources that will help you and yours live as Christians in our culture today. I had the great pleasure yesterday of hearing Ken Myers of Mars HIll Audio give us a list of resources to help us understand the culture. I share some of them with readers today:
5 "Thin" Books: The Abolition of Man (C. S. Lewis); Life is a Miracle (Wendell Berry); Enlightenment & Alienation (Colin Gunton); English-Speaking Justice (George Parkin Grant); Ideas Have Consequences (Richard Weaver).
5 "thicker books": Doing Our Own Thing (John McWhorter); The Use and Abuse of Art (Jacques Barzun); The Whole Equation (David Thomson on film); Who Needs Classical Music? (Julian Johnson); and Autonomous Technology (Langdon Winner). More later. I am hoping to get Ken Myers into Touchstone pretty soon!
Reminder: Today is the last day of 2008 to donate to the Fellowship of St. James to support our work. Thanks so much!
Nice to see Lewis, Weaver, & Berry in Myers' list of 'thin' books. Those are 3 titles that bear reading and rereading by Christians. I remember Tony Esolen saying in a post a few months ago that 'The Abolition of Man' should be read annually, and I'd put forth the same argument for the other two as well.
I'll have to check out the Gunton and Grant volumes.

I can't wait. I have listened to every Mars Hill Audio journal, some several times, as well as several of their extended interviews and audio books. CS Lewis is the greatest influence on my choice of books to read, my wife is second, Mars Hill, Books & Culture and Touchstone and its editors are next. Blessings for the New Year.
