Hmm, our fear of death leads people to accept crazy ideas, such as intelligent design or theism? I've heard something like this before. Religion is all about that, isn't it? Something just invented religion because it helps us overcome our fear of death. Now, Christianity claims not to overcome the fear of death so much as it claims that death itself has, in fact, been overcome, slain, destroyed. Christus Victor. It's what we're celebrating next week (of course, we do that every Sunday as well....)
