This by Ross Douthat in the New York Times argues that Bell's Hell has problems. He makes some good points.
And he quotes Anthony Esolen!

I should never read the comboxes to pieces like this. The smug cluelessness that passes for educated opinion about religion in places like the Times makes me feel so hopeless.

Could you give some examples of Douthat's "smug cluelessness"? In the small amount of space that he had for his column, I'd say he did a more than halfway decent job opining on the recent controversy, far better than the New York Times Book Review's article on Bell's book.

I believe Mr. Lee is referring to those who commented on Mr. Douthat's column, not the column itself.
